Karl Wüst

I’m a Staff Researcher and Engineer at Mysten Labs. Before joining Mysten Labs in January 2023, I was a tenure-track faculty member (Assistant Professor) at CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security from October 2021 until the end of 2022. Previous to that, I completed my PhD at ETH Zurich in the System Security Group under the supervision of Srdjan Capkun.
My research interests are broadly in computer security with a particular focus on digital currencies, decentralized storage, and smart contract systems. My research combines techniques from cryptography, distributed systems, and trusted hardware to build systems that are practical and balance the trade-off between reducing trust assumptions and high performance, while getting strong security and privacy guarantees. For more information about my research, have a look at my publications which you can also find on my google scholar profile.
I am also one of the creators of Walrus, a secure decentralized storage system that uses erasure coding to efficiently and securely store files in a decentralized network with byzantine faults.
